Relationship Between Massage and A Healthy Child

Irrespective of age, it is important to massage every child at bedtime. As strange as it may sound, this is not some new concept. For ages, infant massage has been a very common practice in African and Eastern cultures. There are still many tribes which use different forms of bodywork to relax, soothe and heal their children.

Irrespective of age, it is important to massage every child at bedtime. As strange as it may sound, this is not some new concept. For ages, infant massage has been a very common practice in African and Eastern cultures. There are still many tribes which use different forms of bodywork to relax, soothe and heal their children. They may even use various herbal remedies and scented oils. We have busy lives these days. Therefore, it becomes difficult for us to spend some quality time with our family members and help them relax. Massage can easily help you to strengthen your bond with children and even convey a sense of trust and security. In fact, there are many massage courses in Melbourne and other cities of Australia for which you can sign up and learn some special techniques of massaging a child.

The first sense that your child develops is the sense of touch. It is very important for babies to have physical contact with their parents. It is believed that children who have had healthy physical contact in early stages of life grow up to have a strong self-esteem, long lasting relationships and a sense of limitations and boundaries.

Moreover, massage can reduce stress in children. When your child starts going to school, he/she is in an unfamiliar territory with strangers. As a result, your child may experience some stress. In fact, financial problems, divorced parents, family illness and other reasons can cause stress in adolescents. Many researches have also talked about the relationship between stress and your immune system. If stress is reduced in your body, you can have a healthy immune system which keeps you fit.

Most of the massage courses ask you to apply gentle strokes to an infant body. However, you have to improvise as your child grows up. You will have to work on the ankles, feet, toes, fingers and even use more extensive techniques and strokes. Massages courses can easily help a young mother. However, this complete scenario is different for teenagers. With teenagers, you will have to hire a massage therapist. Needless to say, teenagers don't like to have massages from their parents.

Massage for Children with Special Needs

Children with special needs also respond positively to massages. Pre-term infants, HIV positive babies and cocaine exposed children show signs of weight gain, improved motor skills and reduced stress. Moreover, such children get more active and alert.

Many studies prove that massages are also good for behavioral and psychological problems. Children with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) also show signs of less hyperactivity with massages. Even autistic children show some sort of improvement with massages. They tend to be less sensitive towards touch and relate to people around them in a better way. Teenagers suffering from Bulimia show signs of reduced anxiety and depression. Moreover, other psychiatric patients experience clinical progress and improved sleep.

The sense of touch is quite important for the overall development of a child and his/her good health. Children need to be touched with care and compassion. They need in the same way as they need other important things like food or water. A good massage ensures that your child feels a positive and nurturing experience.
