7 Things You Never Thought to Do with Salt

Salt is a very interesting mineral that is very often taken for granted. Most of the time we only stop to think about when deciding whether or not a food we're buying has too much salt added to it. Occassionally we might be reminded of that old proverb; rubbing salt in the wound, but rarely do we stop to wonder > what is salt really good for?

Salt is a very interesting mineral that is very often taken for granted. Most of the time we only stop to think about when deciding whether or not a food we're buying has too much salt added to it. Occassionally we might be reminded of that old proverb; rubbing salt in the wound, but rarely do we stop to wonder > what is salt really good for?

Thankfully you're in luck, because I was thinking that very thought and it occurred to me that one day you might wonder too. So I've compiled here a list of the 7 most interesting uses for Salt that most people would never expect.

7. Egg Removal - Did you know that a dash off salt can compell even the most stubborn egg yolks from just about any fabric? This is a handy tip to have around with Easter being so close. To use this trick you must be quick to get the egg before it dries into the fabric. While it's fresh, grab a pour a generous heaping of salt onto any part of the fabric soured with egg and then let it sit. The salt is like a sponge and will suck all of the moisture out, which is most of what the egg yolk is. After a few minutes, rub the salt off and clean the rest with a few dabs of water.

6. Armpit Stains Be Gone! - There are plenty of non-embarassing reasons why those pesky stains stay in the pits of your (or your mans) shirts. Those reasons really don't matter anymore though, as they are quickly pulled out of even the oldest shirt with a simple solution of salt and water. Just add 4 tablespoons of salt to a quart of water and then rub the stains clean with cloth or a sponge.

5. Kill the Itch - If you've been bitten or stung by a bug or other creepy-crawler or even if you've simply wandered into a batch of poisn ivy, get out your salt and make a thin paste with it in some water. Generously splatter that paste anywhere you need it with no worries of ill side effects. This trick also works for general itchiness of any sort.

4. Abcess Relief - As someone whose had her fair share of dental disabilities, I can attest to the power of salt when it comes to immediate mouth care. One of the best uses aside from pain relief, is to use salt as a means for drawing out the toxins often found in tooth abscesses.

3. Stick to the Stink! - If you find you have challenges with foot odor, Salt is actually known to work better than baking powder or Goldbond (same difference), especially when it comes to fungal foot infections and other maladies of the feet.

2. Anti-Ants - You probably knew that salt kills slugs, but did you know that Ant's don't like it much either? It's true! Sprinkle some salt anywhere you don't want ants.

1. Grow Your Own Crystals - This trick is often more popular with sugar, but the crystals last longer and look much cooler than anything you'll get with sweets. You need 6 tablespoons each of Salt, Ammonia, Food Coloring and Water. Mix them together in a shallow bowl and toss in a few rocks from outside. Your crystals will start to become noticable after about 3 weeks when you can add a little more water to make them grow bigger.
